Growing Combretum from Seed

Firstly remove the seed from the winged case.  Each contains one seed and is easy to identify.  To hasten germination, soak the seeds in warm water for 12 – 24 hours.

Sow 5 mm deep in a good quality compost and seal the pot in a ziplock bag or place in a propagator.  Germination should take 14 – 28 days at a temperature of 20 – 25 Deg C (70 – 80 F).

When large enough to handle pot singly in a fairly deep pot and grow on in slightly cooler conditions, taking care not to damge the fragile roots. Initial growth is fairly fast but in the tree species after a couple of years it slows down and specimens of the larger species have been reliably dated to be over 1000 years old.
