    Description

Abies koreana - Korean Fir

This is a listing for 25 seeds of this beautiful conifer

It is a small to medium-sized evergreen coniferous tree growing to 10-18 m tall with a trunk diameter of up to 0.7 m, smaller and sometimes shrubby at tree line. The bark is smooth with resin blisters and grey-brown in colour. The leaves are needle-like, flattened, 1-2 cm long and 2-2.5 mm wide by 0.5 mm thick, glossy dark green above, and with two broad, vividly white bands of stomata below, and slightly notched at the tip. The leaf arrangement is spiral on the shoot, but with each leaf variably twisted at the base so they lie mostly either side of and above the shoot, with fewer below the shoot. The shoots are green-grey at first, maturing pinkish-grey, with scattered fine pubescence. The cones are 4-7 cm long and 1.5-2 cm broad, dark purple-blue before maturity; the scale bracts are long, green or yellow, and emerge between the scales in the closed cone. The winged seeds are released when the cones disintegrate at maturity about 5–6 months after pollination.

Reasonably slow growing, the great advantage of this species is that it carries its stunning cones whilst still very small.  It is hardy in Zones 5 - 9 (although it is marginal in Zone 4 and can grow there in a sheltered location).  It makes an ideal subject for bonsai training.

Full growing instructions can be downloaded from my shop, details on my 'ME' page.

Please read the listing thoroughly so that you understand what it is you will be purchasing.  If you have questions, please ask them before purchase as this is the time any queries, ambiguities or simple misunderstandings can be readily resolved.  You may download the instruction sheets at any time by following the links from my about 'ME' page (shown after my username at the top of any listing).

All seeds sold are fresh and are stored in conditions suitable to promote the viability of that particular type of seed.

Germinating seeds and growing plants are subject to many other factors including the conditions under which they are raised (including but not limited to: Light, moisture, soil, humidity) and the skill of the individual grower.  As the vendor, such  factors are completely outside of my control and all seeds and plants are supplied on this basis.

The seed count forms an important part of the listing.  All counts are exact, the only exception being where the seed is small and difficult to count accurately - in this case the count should be taken to be the minimum we will provide.
