    Description

Agave tequiliana - Blue Agave

This listing is for a pack of 5 seeds of this beautiful and very rare Agave.

Agave tequiliana is a very large agave with strap-like leaves up to 1.5 metres long.  These are blue green and have a spine at the tip and variable spines on the edges of the leaves.  It forms a rosette up to 3.5 metres across, which is generally solitary in the wild, although cultivated specimens are often forced to 'pup' in order to provide new generations of crop plants.  The plant produces a single flowering stem at the end of its life, turning all its energy reserves into the flowering.  The stem rise rapidly and can reach a height of 7- 11 metres and produce several branches near the top which carry 1000's of yellow flowers.  The flowers are a source of agave nectar.  The plant is often cultivated and when flowering commences, the stem is cut to force the plant to put its energies into the heart of the plant (the part that is harvested to have the sap extracted).

This Agave is the primary source of the sap used to make Tequila, the production of which results in the death of the plant before it flowers - additionally the method of propagation used by Tequila farms has drastically reduced the genetic variation within the genus, to the point where seeds, such as this, are expensive to produce (because the plant cannot then be harvested) and it is only from wild growing populations (generally remote and hard to access) that the seeds are collected.  This is a rare chance to acquire something very special in the succulent world.  It can be grown as a houseplant or a conservatory/patio pot specimen, where it will happily grow provided it is kept dry at the roots in the winter.

The plant is only moderately hardy, withstanding light frosts and temperatures down to - 7 Deg C for short periods if dry at the roots.  Like most Agaves, it is easy to grow from seed.
