Agave utahensis var nevadensis

One pack of 25 fresh seeds

This the smallest and hardiest variety of this particular Agave species. It is very distinctive due to its unusual spine formation and the way the imprints of the surrounding leaves persist on the leaves throughout their life. It originates from Eastern California, Southern Nevada and Northwestern Arizona. Generally uncommon, it nevertheless forms large colonies when it is found.

A very slow growing species, the rosette will barely attain 40 cm across even when fully grown. The leaves has a sharp, elongated terminal spine and curiously hooked spines on the margins. It is a very hardy plant, perhaps the most hardy of the genus, withstanding deep snow in habitat as its range covers some quite high peaks where winter minimums get as low as minus 23 Deg C.

As a group the Agaves are known as Century Plants, due to the mistaken belief that they take 100 years before they flower. This species will flower after around 12 - 20 years, which is around the average for the smaller species. The flower stem grows to 3 metres in about 4 months or so, it is unbranched and has numerous lemon yellow flowers. The plant then puts all of its energy into this and subsequent seed production. Shortly after this the plant will die, but it may form offsets at this point, which can be grown on.

It is very easy to germinate and grow on. As this is hardy to USDA Zone 5 in habitat, this will prove to be hardy in parts of the UK, providing it can be kept dry during the coldest weather - instructions will be sent for outdoor growing
