Araujia sericifera - Cruel Vine

This listing is for 10 seeds of this South American native plant.

Araujia sericifera is a perennial ornamental plant in the genus Araujia belonging to Apocynaceae family. Its common names include Moth Plant, White Bladderflower, Common Moth Vine and Cruel Vine.

Araujia sericifera is a creeping vine that can climb up to 5–7 metres (16–23 ft) of height. If broken this plant releases a milky smelly exudate. Leaves are opposite, dark green, glossy and quite fleshy, almost triangular, with entire margins, about 10–12 centimetres (3.9–4.7 in) long.

The twining stems bear plenty of fragrant, chalice-shaped bisexual flowers, of about 2 centimetres (0.79 in) of diameter, with five white, creamish, violet or pale pink petals. The flowers are usually pollinated by moths (hence one of the common names of the plant), butterflies and bees (entomophily), quite often the pollinating insect gets temporarily trapped by backward slanting hairs in the flower tube (giving rise to the name Cruel Vine), however this entrapment is only temporary as when the flower is pollinated (often by the struggles of the trapped insect) the hairs wilt and the insect is released unharmed - they are also capable of automatic self-pollination. The flowering period extends from July through September. The pear-shaped fruits are large pods of about 8–10 centimetres (3.1–3.9 in) of length. They contain numerous black seeds surrounded by silky hairs which enable them to be dispersed by the wind.

It is not hardy at all and will need to be grown as a pot plant in areas that are subjected to any frost. It makes a charming houseplant and will easily climb up a frame or around a hoop and can flower at any time of the year.

Easy to germinate following the instructions located at this link.
