Arisaema nepenthoides - Spotted Cobra Lily

This is a listing for 10 seeds of this hardy perennial member of the arum family.

This species is known as the Spotted Cobra Lily. It is quite a tall species, with the flower stem getting as tall as 1.5 metres and the leaf stems to almost 2 metres. It has a very different look to most other Cobra Liles with its greenish/yellow spathe with very distinctive purple blotches running in vertical lines. The spadix barely protrudes from the lip of the spathe and this is yellow/green with many minute flowers opening from the base over a period of several days. If pollinated each flower is followed by a berry that ripens to a deep red colour and containing one seed. The leaf stems are green with purple markings and each has a palmate leaf with 5 - 7 lobes.

The plant comes from the Himalayas, including India, Nepal, Tibet and China. It is always found at altitudes of 1700 - 2200 metres in the wild, usually in dappled clearings in woodland meaning it is ideally suited to a temperate climate. Grow it in a moist location, with winter protection from severe freezes (a mulch layer of several cm will suffice) or in pots (large pots it must be said). When you consider that single rhizomes of this species can set you back 4 or 5 times the price of a pack of 10 seeds, this represents an inexpensive way of getting a large number of plants.

Germination is straightforward and full instructions can be found by following this link, which provides details of all the Arisaema species we stock. This species is hardy in Zone 7 through 9.
