Bismarckia nobilis - Silver Bismarck Palm THIS LISTING IS FOR A PACK OF 5 LARGE AND VERY HEAVY SEEDS OFBISMARCKIA NOBILIS. Bismarckia is a monotypic genus of flowering plantin the palm family endemic to western and northern Madagascar wherethey grow in open grassland. The genus is named for the firstchancellor of the German Empire Otto von Bismarck and the epithet forits only species, Bismarckia nobilis, comes from Latin for 'noble'B. nobilis grows from solitary trunks, gray to tan in color, whichshow ringed indentations from old leaf bases. Trunks are 30 to 45 cmin diameter, slightly bulging at the base, and free of leaf bases inall but its youngest parts. In their natural habitat they can reachabove 25 meters in height but usually get no taller than 12 m incultivation. The nearly rounded leaves are enormous in maturity, over3 m wide, and are divided to a third its length into 20 or more stiff,once-folded segments, themselves split on the ends. Petioles are 2-3m, slightly armed, and are covered in a white wax as well ascinnamon-colored scales; the nearly-spherical leaf crown is 7.5 m wideand 6 m tall. Most cultivated Bismarckias feature silver-blue foliagealthough a green leaf variety exists (which is less hardy to cold).These seeds are from the silver/blue strain and are hardy down to -3Deg C and can recover readily from the damage caused by dips to - 6Deg C.These palms are dioecious and produce small brown flowers which, infemale plants, mature to a brown ovoid drupe, each containing a singleseed weighing in excess of 20 grams.Full instructions can be found by visiting my 'About Me' page andclicking on my store link there.
