Packet of 5 seeds.

This is a rhizomatous plant from the Cape area of South Africa. It is an evergreen, with sword like leaves arising from the underground rhizome. It will eventually form thick clumps. It is also known as Aristea major, indeed until earlier this year this was the accepted name for it, but it has (like so many other species) been renamed in light of new evidence.

A member of the iris family, it is not overly hardy, so would need some form of protection in areas subject to regular frosts. Tall growing, perhaps as tall as 1.5 - 2 metres when in flower, this makes a graceful addition to any garden (with a mild climate) or collection of bulbs that can be container grown. It has blue flowers on a very tall flowering stem as do most of the species of Aristea. This gives rise to it's common name

Quick and easy from seed it may flower in it's 3rd year. Rapidly spreading it will quickly cover a large area and the rhizomes can be divided and used for propagation. As an alternative it may be container grown in less favourable areas.
