Brachychiton acerifolius - Illawara Flame Tree

This listing is for 10 seeds of this drought resistant tree.

This tree and its relatives are also know as Kurrajong in its native Australia. It is dry deciduous and flowers best where it is kept dry over the winter period. If kept too wet in winter, it may not flower fully in the Spring. In flower, the tree is truly spectacular, covering itself in red, bell shaped, pendulous flowers. These are followed by hard seed pods containing hard yellow/black seeds. The seeds were toasted and eaten by aboriginal people. The leaves follow the flowers, which in habitat would be around the time of the summer rains. The leaves are palmate and quite large for this genus. The tree has a swollen trunk and can be cultivated quite easily as a bonsai specimen.

It can be grown outside in many temperate areas as it is hardy in Zones 8 to 11. Tt is easy to grow from seed and will grow quite quickly following the instructions found at this link.
