Carpobrotus edulis - The Hottentot Fig - 25 Fresh Seeds

Carpobrotus edulis - The Hottentot Fig

This listing is for 25 seeds of this South African succulent plant.

Known locally as the Hottentot Fig because the local Hottentot people used to eat the fleshy seeds capsule much in the manner of a fig. It is a member of the Mesembryanthemum family, which can be characterised by flowers that generally only open in the full sun. It grows like a carpet with the daisy like pink/lilac flowers being held above the mat of succulent leaves.

In many areas it can be grown outside year round providing it does not get subjected to extended hard frosts. It can be found in bedding schemes in many areas by the sea, especially in the south of the UK. It will also grow well in Mediterranean areas, forming large clumps which are particularly spectacular when in flower. The flowers are followed by the fleshy seed capsules which contain many hundreds of small seeds.
