Pack of 25 seeds

This is one of the smaller Agaves and it originates from a very localized area in Mexico. It grows only on Limestone soils in the Chihuahuan and Sonoran Deserts and nowhere else.

This plant is slow growing and will eventually be around 60 cm across the rosette. The leaves are thick and leathery and armed with quite sharp spines, in particular the terminal spine. One of the local names for the plants translates as 'shin dagger', recalling the fact that the unwary will find that the spine will pass through clothing and indeed leather boots with relative ease.

As a group the Agaves are known as Century Plants, due to the mistaken belief that they take 100 years before they flower. This species will flower after around 15 years. The flower stem grows to 2 - 3 metres in about 10 months or so. The flowers are very 'minimalist', consisting of just enough to ensure that the flowers get pollinated, this is another superb adaptation to its life in the tough desert conditions in which it ekes out an existence. The plant then puts all of its energy into this and subsequent seed production. Shortly after this the plant will die, but produces 10's if not 100's of thousands of seeds per plant. In addition the plant will produce several offsets which will grow and mature into flowering plants in their own turn
