Dodecatheon meadia, knownas shooting star, is a species of wildflower found in the SoutheasternUnited States, from Southeastern Minnesota and Southern Wisconsin toOklahoma and Texas, and Maryland to Georgia and Alabama. Grows inmoist or dry woods and prairies. It blooms in the spring and goesdormant in summer.A useful and beautiful addition to the spring border, it is a relativeof the primrose and the plants go dormant after flowering, thereappear the following winter, ready to flower in the spring. Theplants can be expected to flower in the third year from seed, but arewell worth the wait.
