Echinacea angustifolia - Narrow Leaf Cone Flower
This is a listing for a pack of 50 seeds. This is a widespread native being found on dry prairie from Canada down to New Mexico and Texas. It grows to around 70 cm tall and is a perennial that spreads by means of its rhizomatous roots, a feature common to many USA temperate perennial herbs. The flowers are typical for that of the group, with a cone shaped flower caused as the petals reflex away from the centre. The rose coloured petals in this species are reflexed quite strongly. Also known as elk root, it was used in Native Herbal medicine as the tribes would often follow wounded elk who sought out the plant and consumed the roots.
Tolerant of a wide range of growing conditions, this species is suitable for Zones 3 - 9. Ideally suited for a wildlife or wildflower garden, this plant is extremely attractive to both butterflies and birds. It will also add charm to a cottage garden planting with the cone like flowers nodding gently in any breeze.
