    Description

Edithcolea grandis - The Persian Carpet Flower

This listing is for a pack of 5 seeds.

Here is a rare opportunity as these seeds are seldom offered except by specialist seed sellers and then at very high prices.  Edithcolea grandis is a member of the Stapeliad family (Starfish flowers).  It has remarkable flowers which give rise to its common name of Persian Carpet Flower.  The flowers are coloured and patterned reminiscent of Persian rugs and are carried on quite young plants.  Occurring naturally in isolated areas of East Africa (Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia/Eritrea), it is also found in the Yemen and Socotra.  Never particularly common at any of these locations, it is also quite hard to locate unless it is in flower when the heavily marked flowers give it away.

Its relationship to the  other members of the family is uncertain as its growth habit is quite unusual.  It has hard stems with hard thorns on like a Hoodia, but it  grows more like an Orbea or a Huernia.  The stem joints do not detach easily as in all other Stapeliads, moreover they are fused and  solid, reminiscent of a shrubs branches, making it very hard to strike cuttings, leaving seed culture as the only realistic option for most  growers. Easy to germinate, not so  easy to grow, although seed growing lessens many of the risks to the plant.

Once more this is a rare opportunity to try your hand at growing one of the true aristocratic beauties of the Stapeliad world and one I am not sure I  will ever be in a position to offer again.  Supplies of the seed are very limited, so act now or lose out. The resultant plants may flower in as little as 2 years from seed.
