DESCRIPTION

Agave utahensis - The Utah Agave

Viewed from above, the true beauty of the rosette and the thorns.

You are bidding for 5 seeds of this charming and beautiful Agave.

This is a supposedly uncommon Agave from the higher areas of Utah and Northern Nevada. I say supposedly as I have seen all 3 of the more usual varieties growing in quite large numbers locally in their respective habitats. An unusual plant, due to the odd almost sculpted nature of the leaves.

A very slow growing species, the rosette will barely attain 45 cm across even when fully grown. The leaves has a sharp, elongated terminal spine and curiously hooked spines on the margins. It is a very hardy plant, perhaps the most hardy of the genus, withstanding deep snow in habitat.

As a group the Agaves are known as Century Plants, due to the mistaken belief that they take 100 years before they flower. This species will flower after around 12 - 20 years, which is around the average for the smaller species. The flower stem grows to 3 metres in about 4 months or so, it is unbranched and has numerous lemon yellow flowers. The plant then puts all of its energy into this and subsequent seed production. Shortly after this the plant will die, but it may form offsets at this point, which can be grown on.

It is very easy to germinate and grow on. As this is hardy to USDA Zone 5 in habitat, this will prove to be hardy in parts of the UK, providing it can be kept dry during the coldest weather - instructions will be sent for outdoor growing.

Growing Instructions

I always sell seeds that I have experience of growing so the instructions provided represent 1st hand experience. These instructions may change over the course of time (as I find out more about the plants and seeds) but the details that you will be provided with, at purchase, represent the latest version. If you have any questions concerning the culture requirements of this or any other item I am selling please contact me:

I will be happy to provide extra details you require.

Bidding on more than 1 item?

I will always combine shipping wherever this is possible and all auctions finishing within a SEVEN day period will qualify.  If I have not sent an invoice, please e-mail me for a combined invoice when you have finished bidding/buying, doing this will almost certainly save you money.

Due to the varying weights of the seeds it is not possible to apply a standard discount without overcharging for the majority of cases.  Additionally I cannot apply a postal discount unless PayPal payments are combined.

Postage & Handling

International customers - streamlined postage for all seed orders

I will now only be charging two rates for postage for all orders of seeds REGARDLESS of the number of packs bought.

  1. European Rate
  2. Rest of World Rate

Once these rates roll out across my listings, I will once more 'trust' the automated check out process, to make things simpler

These new rates reflects the fact that I use PayPal postage for all my orders and these are the rates I need to charge to use this service

This should allow me to dispatch your orders more rapidly than before as I will not need to visit the Post Office for the majority of the orders, normally inside 24 hours - although at busy times this may take a little longer
