Gaillardia aristata - Blanket or Firewheel Flower

This is a listing for a pack of 500 seeds.

Gaillardia aristata is a species of flowering plant in the sunflower family known by the common names common blanketflower and common gaillardia.

This wildflower is native to much of northern and western North America, where it grows in many habitats. It is also a widely cultivated garden flower. This is a perennial herb reaching maximum heights of anywhere between 20 and 70 centimeters. It has lance-shaped leaves near the base and several erect, naked stems holding the flowers. Each flower head has a center of brownish or reddish purple disc florets and a fringe of ray florets which are about one to three centimeters long and yellow to reddish with dark bases. The fruit is a stout, hairy achene which may be over a centimeter long including the long, spiky pappus.

Some Plateau Indian tribes used blanketflower to treat wounds and settle fevers.

There are two ideas as to the source of the common name of this wildflower. One is in reference to the combination of it's colors. The bi-colored flowers appearing in yellows, reds, burgundys, and browns remind many of the blankets woven by Native Americans. The other ideas comes from this native flower's tendency to blanket over the ground in the wild. Whatever the reason, this plant is a beautiful addition to meadow's, prairies, and garden's, and is loved by many for it's brilliant and showy blossoms. Birds and butterflies are attracted to this flower as well!

Hardy in zones 2a - 10b, preferring a dry location in full sun.
