Found over a fairly small range in South Africa in clay based soils near streams and watercourses. This habit makes it a suitable candidate for growing in damp areas which are not subjected to extreme cold.
The flowers are a strong red colour with faint markings. The flowers are borne on arching stems which naturally lean. Quite robust it grows up to 1.1 metre tall and is one of the winter flowering group. It can be brought from seed to flower in as little as two seasons.
Easy from seed, it can be sown at most times of the year, but in the Northern Hemisphere, a late summer sowing under glass will yield the best results. As with all Gladioli, it will produce numerous offsets when the corms are mature. These can be used to further increase your stock.Full growing instructions may be viewed here:
