Pack of 25 seeds

This is one of the most striking and instantly recognisable Agaves. It originates from Mexico, as indeed do most Agaves. This is a solitary Agave and it is generally accepted that the only way to grow it is from seed. Offsets have been known to occur, but they are rare and cannot be relied upon. The leaves have striking white markings which are apparent from a very early age.

This plant is slow growing and will eventually be around a metre across the rosette. The leaves look almost as if they have been carved or sculpted and have one to three sharp spines on the ends of the leaves, which can take the unwary by surprise, so it should be sited with care wherever it is grown..

As a group the Agaves are known as Century Plants, due to the mistaken belief that they take 100 years before they flower. This species will flower after around 25 - 35 years.. The flower stem grows to 3 - 4 metres in about 10 months or so. The plant then puts all of its energy into this and subsequent seed production. Shortly after this the plant will die, but produces 10's if not 100's of thousands of seeds per plant, just as well given the lack of offsets and the fact that this is the life's work of the plant
