    Description

Hylocereus undatus - Dragonfruit

This listing is for a pack of 25 seeds.

One of the best known ephiphytic cacti, it is widely grown for its large exotic looking fruit (dragon fruit). It likely originated with the rest of its group in the jungles of Central America, although it is widely claimed as native across the world, it should be recalled that cacti are plants of the New World and are not naturally found outside of the Americas.

It will grow as a epiphyte or as a lithophyte (scrambling on rocks). It has adventitious roots enabling it to root as it goes, meaning any attempt to say how big it can get is likely to be wrong. Individual stems may be many feet long and there is a plant in Hawaii that covers a wall some 300 metres long on both sides and has a provenance proving it is one plant.

It flowers in the summer, these huge blooms open generally for one night only, fading by the following afternoon. In this is shows its relationship to other scented, white flowered cacti. It is pollinated by moths, bats and nocturnal beetles. The flower is followed by the huge fruit which ripens to a cerise pink and may contain either white or pink flesh with many hundreds of seeds embedded.

It is not hardy. It should not be subjected to temperatures below 10 Celsius at any point. It prefers humus rich soil, a fair degree of water and bright filtered light.

Full details as to how to germinate and grow this plant can be found by the link on my 'ME' page.
