    Description

Hyphaene coriacea - Lala Palm

This listing is for a pack of 3 large (27 - 45 grams) seeds.  The seeds are well in excess of the size acceptable for any letter post, so will have to be sent using the more expensive small parcel service.

Hyphaene coriacea is known as the Lala palm and comes from East Africa, Madagascar down to South Africa.  It is smaller than some of its relatives, but is nonetheless a stunning fan palm with large adult leaves.  The palm has a unique relationship with a species of Swift, which literally glues its eggs to the leaves, using saliva (a similar substance to the swiftlets who are exploited for birds nest soup).  The fruits take 2 years to mature and a further 2 years to fall and are often eaten by elephants.  The hard kernel is a source (albeit minor one) for vegetable ivory and it is carved to produce trinkets.  The seed is dispersed usually be being eaten by large herbivores that extract the nutrients from the outer husk and pulp, leaving the hard kernel untouched but in a ready source of 'compost'.  Like its relatives the fibrous pulp has a pleasant taste (akin to Gingerbread) and is relished by locals as well as foraging animals.

The species is closely related to such palms as the Bismarck Palm of Madagascar and the Nubian Palm of North Eastern Africa.

In the wild the plant will grow up to 5 metres tall,  in cultivation the plants can be kept more manageable by growing them in large pots.  Although not frost tolerant, they can be grown outside in the warmer weather (being kept inside during cooler weather).  The plants will take lots of water, although they will not tolerate being waterlogged, they will respond to such culture by growing quite rapidly at first.
