Pack of 5 seeds.

This is an extremely rare endemic of South Africa. In the wild it is restricted to a single site and half of this has been built over. It is reckoned that this plant will be extinct in the wild in the next 10 years. Fortunately it's ease of cultivation means that it is a fairly common subject in collections around the world, even though it was only discovered in the last 40 years.

A member of the Hyacinth family, it flowers in the autumn after a long dormant spell in the summer (a reaction to the hot and dry conditions experienced in its habitat). It produces strap shaped leaves and a spike of flowers that are turquoise or sea green in colour. This is an extremely rare colour in any bulbous plant and places this Lachenalia in a very small and exclusive group. The flowers are not scented and persist for 14 - 18 days before fading. Where pollinated the flowers are followed by seed capsules containing numerous small black seeds. It is likely that the plants will self seed if left to their own devices.

This species is hardy, but it does not like to be overly wet during its resting periods. For this reason it is probably best to grow it in a shallow pan or bowl, where it can be moved out of the wet, should the need arise. Quick and easy from seed, this may flower in the second or third year from seed.
