Liatris spicata - Marsh Blazing Star

This listing is for 50 seeds of this perennial cottage garden favourite.

This species is commonly known as the Marsh Blazing Star or Gayfeather and is native to the Eastern USA and Canada. The plant grows up to 1.5 metres tall, although 1 metre is more usual. The plant produces spikes of purple flowers in mid to late summer. It is tolerant of a wide range of conditions, but those grown drier or with less nutrients in the soil will produce less dense flower spikes. The flowers make wonderful long lasting cut flowers and are also very attractive to wildlife, in particular butterflies whic,h regardless of location, find them irresistable. The plants die down to a rhizomatus root stock in the winter and should be carefully divided every 4 to 5 years in order to keep them at their best.

Hardy in Zones 4 to 10, it is easy to grow from seed and will quickly establish itself. It does require a 60 day stratification period so can either be sown outdoors in the autumn, or sown in pots and then subjected to cold weather (either in a frame or in the fridge) before the warmer spring weather encourages germination. Full instructions for growing all US wildflowers can be found at this link.
