Description

Lithops Mixture - The Living Stones

This listing is for a pack of 25 seeds drawn from across this group of plants.

Lithops (the Living Stones) have fascinated collectors and growers alike since they were first discovered in South Africa in the 18/19th Centuries. They take the art of mimicry to the extremes, disguising themselves as rocks, pebbles and stones to avoid the gaze and 'predation' of grazing animals. They are superbly adapted for life in the harsh habitat they occupy and if well grown in cultivation many of these attributes will be present. The surfaces of the leaves are either flattened or slightly domed and are marked according to species with lines, fissures, dots or tubercles (or a combination of all of these). The colours vary from pale cream to reddish brown, light green to dark green depending on species. The bodies of the plants are coneshaped, but much of this is below ground with only the tips of the leaves showing. The leaf tips have translucent patches (known as windows) which let in the light and below this, in the cone-shaped body the plant has its food producing cells with numerous chloroplasts to make the most of the sunshine coming through. In the dry season, the plants shrivel slightly and the roots pull them down into the ground for protection and await the next rains.

They only ever produce one set of leaves per head per year. The new leaves appear from the inside of the previous years, transferring the precious moisture to them in the process. The old leaves then shrivel and in some cases remain attached like a caul, protecting the new leaves. The flowers are produced annually in the summer from the central fissure in the leaf pair. This followed by a seed capsule containing many seeds. The flowers are like daisies and are either white or yellow (depending on species) and only open fully in full sun (closing at dusk or on cloudy days). The flowers last a few days but a clump may open a succession of flowers over a week or so. The effect in cultivation is quite something, but in habitat it can be completely stunning as vast tracts of land appear covered in daisy like blooms where a few days before it appeared to be just a rocky patch of ground.

This mixture of seeds is drawn from over 150 species, sub-species, varieties and forms, each with something to offer by way of being decorative in or out of flower.
