Lobularia maritima, known as Sweet Alyssum, is a short livedperennial, most often grown as an annual.It is an annual plant (rarely a short-lived perennial plant) growingto 10-30 cm tall. The stem is very branched, with dense clusters ofsmall flowers. The leaves are 1-4 cm long and 3-5 mm, broad,alternate, sessile, quite hairy, oval to lanceolate, with an entiremargin.The flowers are about 5 mm in diameter, sweet-smelling, with fourwhite rounded petals and four sepals. The six stamens have yellowanthers. The flowers are produced throughout the growing season, oryear-round in areas free of frost. The flowering period usuallyextends from March-April through September. They are pollinated byinsects. The fruits are numerous elongated seedpods rather hairy, ovalto rounded, each containing two seeds.Native to the Mediterranean area, it will often naturalise where it ishappy, either as short lived perennials or as re-seeding annuals. Thecolder the growing area, the greater the tendency towards and annualhabit. It can be sown quite early in the season and treated as eithera half-hardy or a fully hardy annual.
