Description

Passiflora quadrangularis - The Giant Grandilla

This listing is for 10 seeds.

This is the true giant amongst the passionflowers, both the flowers and the fruit are the largest in the genus. It orginates in the tropical americas, although it is now widely grown both as a food plant and a medicinal plant. It has large, undivided, heart shaped leaves and the stems climb by means of tendrils. It can grow to enormous proportions, but this will be at the expense of flowering, so it should be constrained either in a large pot/container or by judicious pruning of open grown specimens.

Like all passionflowers, the flower is its most spectacular part. The flowers is shades of maroon, crimson, purple and white - looking almost alien against the plain back drop of the foliage. The flowers are heavily scented and, if polinated, are followed by the fruit which can weigh up to 500 grams. The fruit has two edible parts, the sweet/acidic pulp surrounding the seeds (as in most passionfruit) and the pith under the skin which can be cooked and eaten as a vegetable.

The leaves of this species are used to make a tea which is used for both high blood pressure and diabetes.

The name passionflower derives from the early missionaries to South America, who used the flower to describe the 'Passion of Christ' - the 5 petals and 5 sepals represented the 10 apostles who remained true (less Judas and Peter), the corolla of filaments represents the crown of thorns, the 5 styles represent the 5 wounds and finally the 3 stigma represent the 3 nails used to crucify Christ.
