Penstemon angustifolius - Narrow Leaf Beardtongue

This listing is for 250 seeds of this hardy, drought tolerant US wildflower.

Penstemon angustifolius is a species of flowering plant in the plantain family known by the common names broadbeard beardtongue and narrowleaf beardtongue. It is native to the west-central United States, including the Great Plains. This species is a perennial herb with thick, waxy, gray-green stems growing up to 24 inches tall. The flowers come in shades of pink and purple. The flowers attract hummingbirds (if you have them) and early season butterfly's. This species grows on grasslands and in sandy habitat types, such as dunes. It is drought-tolerant. This plant can be used in landscaping and as a garden plant in xeriscaping situations. The Lakota people used the flowers to make blue dye for painting moccasins.

Hardy in Zones 3 to 9, it is easy to grow from seed and will quickly establish itself. It does require a 60 day stratification period so can either be sown outdoors in the autumn, or sown in pots and then subjected to cold weather (either in a frame or in the fridge) before the warmer spring weather encourages germination. Full instructions for growing all US wildflowers can be found at this link.
