Description

Pereskia aculeata - Barbados Gooseberry

This listing is for a pack of 5 seeds of this unusual member of the cactus family.

Pereskia is the the root of all of the groups of cactus, all species being able to trace their history back to this ancient and very un-cactus like cactus. Look closely, however, and you will see the links. The spines, the aeroles (reduced branch structures), the glochids (small spines found in Prickly Pears) and the flowers/fruit are all what we think of when we see a cactus. The missing bit is succulence, these are not succulent at all. They have no need to be, they come from Central America and the Caribbean. Finally, but not exclusively in Cactus, they have leaves - not succulent leaves, just ordinary leaves.

Pereskia aculeata is native to a wide area of Central America and the Caribbean islands, it has also been introduced in the the southern USA. It is a scrambling shrub with the young stems having hooked spines which help it climb up nearby vegetation such as trees and other shrubs. Older stems have clusters of spines and become very woody. It flowers throughout the summer and these are large white blooms that are heavily scented. They are pollinated by moths, birds, bees and bats. These are followed by the fruit which resemble a prickly pear, but with small leaves on them. The fruit are edible and highly nutrious containing large quantities of protein and iron.

Young plants require a degree of shade and protection from the sun as they normally develop in the shade of another plant until they push through the cover or the shade plant dies.

Easy to germinate and grow on, full instructions can be found by going to my 'ME' page and following the links there.
