Phormium tenax cv Purpureum - New Zealand Flax - 20 Fresh Seeds

Phormium tenax cv Purpureum - New Zealand Flax

This is a listing for a pack of 20 seeds of this excellent cultivar.

Phormium tenax called flax in New Zealand English; harakeke in Māori; New Zealand flax outside New Zealand; and New Zealand hemp in historical nautical contexts is an evergreen perennial plant native to New Zealand and Norfolk Island that is an important fibre plant and a popular ornamental plant. The plant grows as a clump of long, straplike leaves, up to two metres long, from which arises a much taller flowering shoot, with dramatic yellow or red flowers. It is a striking architectural plant and is often found in mixed borders and in rock gardens. This is another good cultivar, its leaves are a deep bronze/purple with green only at the base of the leaves. New leaves may also show initially as green, but they will age to the adult colour within a few weeks, especially in stronger light.

It prefers a soil with good drainage and out of the shade. It is particularly good in coastal settings as it is very tolerant of salt laden air. It is hardy in Zones 6 - 10, capable of taking several degrees of frost for extended periods provided the ground is not completely waterlogged. Fast growing it will quickly establish itself.
