Piper auritum - Hoja Santa

This listing is for a packet of 20 seeds of this tropical herb.

Piper auritum, known as Hoja Santa, is an aromatic herb with a heart-shaped, velvety leaf which grows in tropic Mesoamerica. The name hoja santa means "sacred leaf" in Spanish. It is also known as yerba santa, hierba santa, Mexican pepperleaf, acuyo, tlanepa, anisillo, root beer plant and sacred pepper. The leaves can reach up to 30 centimeters (12 in) or more in size.  Best grown as a houseplant in anywhere other than the tropics, it makes an excellent pot plant, suitable for a bright position.

It is used extensively in Mexican cuisine, being the principal flavouring in mole verde, a sauce from central Mexico.  It is also used as the leaf wrappers for tamales, imparting its unique flavour to the food as it cooks.

Very easy from seed.  Full growing instructions can be downloaded from the link on my ME page.
