Polygonatum commutatum,Solomon's seal or Smooth Solomon's seal, is a widespread native plantof North America, located mainly from the eastern seaboard through theGreat Plains. It is usually located in semi-shaded locations. This perennial plant is about 60 - 90cm tall and unbranched and, typically, leans over to one side. The alternate leaves are up to 15cmlong and 10cm across; they are spaced fairly close together along thestem. From the upper axils of the middle and upper leaves, there are noddingumbels of 1-5 flowers (rarely more than this). Each flower has a narrow tubular shape with 6 small lobes thatare slightly recurved. The blooming period occurs during late springor early summer and lasts about 3 weeks. Each flower is replaced by aberry that is initially green, but it eventually becomes darkblue-violet. The root system produces rhizomes that are rather stout and knobby; onthe upper surface of these rhizomes, there are circular scars. Thisplant often forms colonies. Typical growing conditions are light shadeto partial sun, moist and fertile loamy soil. This plant is fairlyrugged and tolerates less than ideal conditions. The foliage persistsall summer and is rarely bothered by disease.Hardy in Zones 3 - 9.Full instructions can be downloaded from my website, details of whichare on my 'Me' page
