Solanum pimpinellifolium - Currant Tomato

This listing is for 20 seeds of this South American native.

Solanum pimpinellifolium is a species of evergreen shrub native to South America and grown for its edible fruit.

Considered a heirloom tomato variety, it is grown for its fruit and will freely interbreed with the domesticated tomato plant from which it differs in genome by less than 0.6%. It is important as it has a natural resistance to many of the diseases that afflict the tomato and is used by breeders in attempts to breed back this resistance.

The fruit is small (hence currant tomato) and looks like a miniature cherry tomato (it was used in the breeding of this type of tomato). The fruit is considered sweet with a little acidity. It can be grown either as an annual or as a perennial if overwintered frost free
