Huernia hystrix - The Porcupine Flower

This listing is for 5 seeds of this South African native.

This is small succulent member of the the Asclepiad group, which has 4- 6 angled stems with prominent teeth on the margins. It grows to 20cm tall and has an indeterminate spread. The flowers, which can form on plants as young as 1 year old from seed are small and bell shaped and covered with spiky projections like a porcupine or hedgehog. The flowers are often followed by seed pods containing many seeds on silken parachutes. Unlike some of its many relations, this one has little smell and it seems to rely on visual deception in order to fool the pollinators.

It is easy to grow and cultivate, it has few real needs other than a free draining soil and absolutely no frost at all. It makes an excellent pot plant and can be relied on to flower once its reaches adult size in around 1 to 2 years. A video journal about a specimen of this plant can be found here - clearly showing the size of the flowers and a very well grown plant around 3 - 4 years old. Easy to germinate following the instructions located at this link.
