Tectona grandis - Teak This listing is for 10 seeds. Teak is the common name for the tropical hardwood tree speciesTectona grandis and its wood products. Tectona grandis is native tosouth and southeast Asia, mainly India, Indonesia, Malaysia, andBurma, but is naturalized and cultivated in many countries, includingthose in Africa and the Caribbean. The word teak comes from theMalayalam (in the Malabar Coast region) word theka or tekka.Tectona grandis is a large, deciduous tree up to 40 m tall THAT ISDOMINANT IN MIXED HARDWOOD FORESTS with gray to grayish brownbranchlets. The leaves are oval in shape.Fragrant white flowers are borne on 25-40 cm long by 30 cm widepanicles from June to August. The corolla tube is 2.5-3 mm long with 2mm wide obtuse lobes. Tectona grandis sets fruit from September toDecember; fruits are globose and 1.2-1.8 cm in diameter.Germination of the seeds involves pretreatment to remove dormancyarising from the thick pericarp. Pretreatment involves alternatewetting and drying of the seed. The seeds are soaked in water for 12hours and then spread to dry in the sun for 12 hours. This is repeatedfor 10-14 days before the seed is actually sown, this mimics theconditions under which the seeds will germinate (ie post Monsoon). This is an ideal specimen for growing as conservatory plant orhouseplant, where frost free conditions cannot be provided outside.Full growing instructions can be reached via my 'Me' page andfollowing the instructions and links there.
