Trichocaulon annulatum - Starfish Flower

This listing is for a pack of 5 seeds.

This is one of the more unusual plants in this already strange group.  Looking much like a cactus, it is in fact related to the starfish/carrion flowers, which is evident when it produces its five pointed flowers. It has upright stems with numerous ribs, which have hard spines which are all that remain of the leaves.

It can be got into flower in its third year from seed if well grown, although generally 4 years is a more realistic goal. The reason for the striking colours and form of the flower becomes apparent when you consider that they are trying to mimic the food of the pollinator - the majority of the species are pollinated by flies in a very complex (one sided) relationship.  The flowers in this species are a very dark almost brooding purple colour and often the stems may be covered in them.  Unlike the Stapelias, these will flower on older growth (as well as new growth).  They demand a fairly steady hand when watering and often they will go dormant shortly after flowering for a few weeks when they should not be watered at all.

These plants come from South Africa and are locally known by a number of names including Zulu Lily.

The flowers have an extremely complex pollination mechanism only rivaled by that seen in orchids.  This generally reduces hybridisation as it is akin to a lock and key.  After the flowers, if pollination has occurred, the plant produces two large seed horns pack full of seeds on silken parachutes.
