    Description

Uncarina decaryi - Mouse Trap Plant

This listing is for a pack of 5, rare and hard to come by seeds.

Uncarina is a group of caudex forming nettle relatives.  It produces a bottle shaped caudex above ground from which branches appear carrying the leaves.  It is dry deciduous, so it will shed its leaves once watering is withheld for any length of time (normally the winter months).  The caudex forms in quite young seedlings and increases in size each growing season.  The leaves are quite big and a bright green in colour.  The flowers which can be carried in huge numbers are spectacular yellow trumpets that are produced in late spring/early summer and are followed by fruits which have peculiar prickles on one side that catch on anything and if this is skin, they can be quite difficult and painful to remove.  This is where they get the name mouse trap plant from as the the fruit is exactly the same size as the body of a mouse (I am sure a mouse would just eat the seed pod without too much bother, the spines are there to disperse the pod on larger animals such as lemurs which inhabit the forested areas where these grow).

As this plant originates from Madagascar, it is suitable for outdoor culture only where there are no frosts at all, indeed temperatures below 2 Deg C will cut it back to the ground, spoiling the caudex and forcing it to grow a new one, which may or may not be as good as the original.  Elsewhere it makes a good choice as a houseplant as being a succulent it requires little by way of care in order to thrive. It is rare in cultivation, but very easy to grow and care for.
