This slow to medium fast growing eucalypt and is one of the group known as the red-gums, due to the colour of the bark. The bark in this species is one of the most colourful of all of the eucalyptus species, being an orange/russet in colour.
An evergreen, the leaves are broader than some of the other species, making the leaves more oval than lance shaped. The bark peels and changes colour as it ages, eventually taking on an almost rusty appearance. It is for this reason, rather than the small and insignificant flowers that are borne in the summer.
It is hardy to Zone 9, perhaps a little lower and will grow quickly where it establishes. Eventually growing to a height of 25 metres or more, with a spread of 15 metres. It can easily be kept in check by pruning and can take very harsh treatment in this respect. This means that the tree is easily grown as a Bonsai.
