Similar in form to gladiolus,but far less widely planted, Watsonia generally flower earlier in theyear so are an ideal counterpoint to gladiolus plantings. In thisgenus, the variety found in the various species in terms of flowercolour, flowering time and growth habit far outweighs those found incommercial hybrids.Previously known as Watsonia beatricis, Watsonia pillansii is a robustspecies that grows to 1.3 metres tall. It has a tall spike of orangeflowers with a darker coloured flower tube. In the northern hemisphereit is likely to flower in mid July through late August. It is astunning species, ideal for use in mixed plantings or as backdrop.Where happy it will rapidly spread, coming back better each year.Suitable for growth in Zones 7 through 10, in the colder areas itshould either be lifted (like gladioli) or given a heavy dry mulch tokeep the frost out.
