Packet of 5 seeds.
This is a partly hardy bulbous plant from South Africa. Flowering in late spring to early summer, it is best grown in pots or pans, so that the amount of water can be moderated in what can be a very wet season in the Northern Hemisphere. The plant grows to 2 m tall and the flower spike bears many scarlet red flowers that open over an extended period, perhaps as much as 5 weeks. One of the less well known members of this genus of 52 species, it is one of the most spectacular.
A member of the crocus family, it is hardy down to around - 5 C, so would need some form of protection in areas subject to temperatures lower than this.
Quick and easy from seed it may flower in it's 3rd year. Rapidly dividing it will quickly cover a large area and the offset corms can be used for propagation.
