Octopus Tree - Didierea madagascariensis

You are bidding for a packet of 10 seeds of this extremely unusual Madagascan endemic.

The large island of Madagascar has a whole host of unique and fascinating species of both plants and animals and the Octopus Tree is no exception. Quite unlike anything on the African mainland, it is more closely related to the Cactus family. Indeed it shares certain structural similarities with that family as its leaves and spines arise from the same modified branches, the areoles and it can be grafted onto cacti with a reasonable chance of success.

Eventually growing into a shrubby, succulent tree around 10 metres tall, it is called the Octopus Tree due to the shape of the branches that come of the main stem at all angles giving the appearance of a spiny octopus. The spines are hard, quite sharp and carried in fours. Nonetheless, the leaves are relished by lemurs and due to the stiffness of the relatively thin branches, even quite large species such as ring-tails and Rufus lemurs can be seen perched precariously on the ends of the branches in an endeavour to reach the new, succulent foliage.

A fascinating plant at all times, it is slow growing and very tough, although not at all hardy. It will flower, when quite large, the flowers are pink and star shaped.

Grow yourself something strange and unusual, this tree is always bound to be a talking point and is very happy in a pot in the average living room. Neither dry air, or drafts bother it much, indeed all it needs is a bright aspect and a free draining soil.

Growing Instructions

I always sell seeds that I have experience of growing so the instructions provided represent 1st hand experience. These instructions may change over the course of time (as I find out more about the plants and seeds) but the details that you will be provided with, at purchase, represent the latest version. If you have any questions concerning the culture requirements of this or any other item I am selling please contact me:

I will be happy to provide extra details you require.

Bidding on more than 1 item?

I will always combine shipping wherever this is possible and all auctions finishing within a SEVEN day period will qualify.  If I have not sent an invoice, please e-mail me for a combined invoice when you have finished bidding/buying, doing this will almost certainly save you money.

Due to the varying weights of the seeds it is not possible to apply a standard discount without overcharging for the majority of cases.  Additionally I cannot apply a postal discount unless PayPal payments are combined.

Postage & Handling

International customers - streamlined postage for all seed orders

I will now only be charging two rates for postage for all orders of seeds REGARDLESS of the number of packs bought.

  1. European Rate
  2. Rest of World Rate

Once these rates roll out across my listings, I will once more 'trust' the automated check out process, to make things simpler

These new rates reflects the fact that I use PayPal postage for all my orders and these are the rates I need to charge to use this service

This should allow me to dispatch your orders more rapidly than before as I will not need to visit the Post Office for the majority of the orders, normally inside 24 hours - although at busy times this may take a little longer
