Packet of 5 seeds.

This is a small bulbous plant with a superb and unique adaptation to aid pollination. It provides its pollinator, the Malachite Sunbird, with a perch so that it can reach the flowers (which are low to the ground) without the need to actually land - making it easier for the bird to take flight should the need arise. Studies have shown that those flowers with damaged or missing 'perches' produce less than half the seed that one with an intact one produces. The 'perch' is an elongated sterile flower spike, this extends to around 4 - 5 times the height of the flowers and gives the plant its common name of Rats' Tail.

A member of the Iris family, it flowers in the Spring and has a pronounced long dormant spell in summer (a reaction to the hot and dry conditions experienced in its habitat). The flowers are followed by pods containing numerous seeds. It is likely that the plants will self seed if left to their own devices, but in the absence of the pollinator it is likely that not much seed will be produced.

This species is ideal for an alpine bed, where protection from summer rains can be provided. Otherwise it can be grown in an alpine house where overhead protection is inherent in the structure enabling the plant to thrive. It may also be grown in an open potting mixture in pots and containers . Not overly hardy, it is not likely to respond well to soil temperatures below - 5 Deg C. In areas where low temperatures are the winter norm, it would be best to grow this in pots or with some protection from the frost (such as a cloche or frame). Quick and easy from seed, this may flower in the third year from seed. Growing Instructions

Postage & Handling International customers - streamlined postage for all seed orders

I will now only be charging two rates for postage for all orders of seeds REGARDLESS of the number of packs bought.

European Rate Rest of World Rate

Once these rates roll out across my listings, I will once more 'trust' the automated check out process, to make things simpler

These new rates reflects the fact that I use PayPal postage for all my orders and these are the rates I need to charge to use this service

This should allow me to dispatch your orders more rapidly than before as I will not need to visit the Post Office for the majority of the orders, normally inside 24 hours - although at busy times this may take a little longer
